What is Sound Healing?
Sound Healing is a healing style utilizing various sound healing instruments. The utilization of these instruments for healing purposes, often referred to as 'vibrational sound therapy' or 'sound healing therapy,' can create or bring about enhanced states of wellness in our physical, emotional, mental or spiritual being. Many cultures and religions revere sound so deeply as to believe it called the universe into being. For the Hindus, all was dark and quiet in the universe, until the first movement in the universe created the sound "AUM". It is the mother tone, containing the frequencies of all other sounds.
How do vibrational sound frequencies affect you?
Everything that moves vibrates, from the smallest molecule to the universe itself. As long as it is vibrating, it is making some kind of sound, even if we do not perceive the sound within our threshold of our hearing. The human ear can hear sound vibrations between 20 and 20,000 cycles per second, although we also perceive sound by skin and bone conduction, ingesting and consuming it with the whole body.
Every atom, molecule, cell, gland, and organ of the human body absorbs and emits sound. The entire body, as well as our brain waves in a relaxed state, vibrates at a fundamental frequency of about 8 cycles per second, literally entraining and attuning us to the basic electromagnetic field of the earth itself! Scientific studies show that sound can produce changes in the autonomic, immune, endocrine and neuropeptide systems.
Use of sound healing instruments such as quartz crystal and Tibetan singing bowls are said to enhance meditation, intuition, relaxation and bodywork. When quartz crystal bowls are played, the sound vibrations absorb into the brain and all the major organs of the body through the Chakra centers. Some quartz crystal singing bowls are tuned to specific musical notes which correspond to the chakras. When a bowl attuned to a chakra is played, it works to balance that chakra and remove stagnant energy from that chakra. This is why they are so powerful when used in chakra balancing, emotional release and clearing of people and places. Quartz crystal technology is actually part of our modern world, as well as in our ancient history.
Many reputable people who have devoted their life's work to the convergence of science and spirituality and are huge proponents of the importance of vibrational sound healing. Gregg Braden, a five-time New York Times best-selling author, scientist, international educator and renowned pioneer in the emerging paradigm based in science, spirituality and human potential is a believer in the healing qualities of sound healing.
"Just the way sound creates visible waves as it travels through a droplet of water, our "belief waves" ripple through the quantum fabric of the universe to become our bodies and the healing, abundance, and peace-or disease, lack, and suffering-that we experience in life. And just the way we can tune a sound to change its patterns, we can tune our beliefs to preserve or destroy all that we cherish, including life itself." / "Science has validated the power of intentionalized, sacred sound to create positive shift and change." - Gregg Braden
Many modern scientists and doctors have translated vibrational sound healing into medical practice. Mitchell Gaynor, M.D., former director of Medical Oncology and Integrative Medicine at the Strang-Cornell Cancer Prevention Center and author of the book, The Healing Power of Sound, has used crystal and Tibetan bowls in his practice with cancer patients. He chronicled a thorough study of sound healing and a holistic approach to mind-body healing.
Sound Healing Instruments
Listed below are some of the other instruments most commonly used for sound healing. These are frequently used in one-on-one sessions, as well as in group sound healing meditations or what many refer to as a group 'sound bath' ceremony.
Drums (traditional, tongue, handpan, djembe)
Native American Flute
Rattles / Rainsticks
Chimes (Koshi/Zaphir, Metal Energy Chimes)
Crystal Harp / Crystal Singing Pyramid
The Human Voice (toning/chanting)
